Luminescence characterisation of LiNbO3

LiNbO3 luminescence has been excited by both ion and electron beams as a monitor of crystal purity and stoichiometry. Samples taken from an experimental boule doped with Mg and Ti show luminescence features characteristic of each impurity and these demonstrate segregation effects during boule growth. In addition to the impurity effects there are major changes in luminescence intensity resulting from variations in stoichiometry. There is a strong correlation between the luminescence intensity and the changes in the position of the optical absorption edge.
