RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT WORK ON ADVANCED METAL-CUTTING TOOLS FOR POWER MACHINERY.

At the present time, an appreciable number of custom-engineered imported NC machine tools are in service at many Soviet enterprises. These machine tools are delivered as part of an integral set of imported equipment and a certain supply of cutting fluids to be used during startup and through the initial period of service. The leading cutting tool for both Soviet and foreign machine tools with NC and GPM features, in lathe, milling, turning, and miscellaneous machining operations are tools with mechanically mounted interchangeable multifaceted hard-alloy tips (SMTP). Successful design, at PO Leningrad Metal Works (PO LMZ), of less expensive and more readily manufacturable designs of Soviet metal-cutting tooling to replace imports has facilitated successful utilization of Soviet-made tooling with excellent service properties, in many operations involving machining of turbine components.
