Sulphur removal from hot metal by external treatment is becoming of increasing importance, and this paper reviews the technical and economic factors governing selection of desulphurising agents. Magnesium products are compared with other materials and current practice and trends in pig iron desulphurisation are described. In addition the potential of magnesium as a refining agent in steelmaking is discussed.
