Study on flexural properties and precipitated phase for intermetallic compound matrix composites of Ti/TiAl

The flexural properties of single phase γ-TiAl alloys and γ-TiAL intermetallic compound matrix composites toughened by ductile Ti fiber were studied by three-point bending test. X-ray diffraction, optical and scanning electron microscopies, together with transmission electron microscopy were employed to examine the phases existing in the materials. The relation between flexural property and the precipitated phases at the interface in Ti/TiAL composites was analyzed. The results show that the transverse rupture strength (TRS) of composites Ti/TiAl increases by a factor of 22.5%, but the plastic deflection (Dp) of Ti/TiAL is about the same as compared with γ-TiAl. It is the intermetallic compounds of Ti3Al, Ti2Al etc. in the interface of composites Ti/TiAl which present obstacles to the improvement of the plastic deflection (Dp) of the composites.
