An open cavity with crossed cylindrical mirrors is investigated. Measurements are made in the 8 millimeter wave band. It is established that high-Q oscillations can be excited in such cavities for relatively small mirror dimensions. The optimal relations are established between the mirror dimensions, wavelength and radius of curvature for which a high cavity Q is provided with minimum mirror dimensions. The dependence of the cavity Q on the misalignment angle and the crossing angle of the mirror axes is investigated. It is shown that these cavities are insensitive to small mirror misalignments. The results of the studies indicate that open cavities with crossed cylindrical mirrors offer good prospects for use at microwave frequencies.
