North Galway, like any other rural areas in Ireland is moving away from its traditional economic dependence on agriculture to a mixed economy encompassing service and manufacturing industry. Within this transition, farming will still play an important role. This prompted Galway County Council to review major public work services. In view of this, the council embarked on a rationalisation programme covering the 65 private and three public water schemes serving the area.
