After noting some of the difficulties associated with maintenance training, the authors describe maintenance training from the standpoint of the learning curve, and address the media and methods traditionally used to teach the trainee at each stage of learning. The integration of interactive videodisc, computer-generated images, and three-dimensional simulation in a total system concept for maintenance skills training is considered. Different types of maintenance skills are identified, along with the methods and techniques for training those skills. Implementation of the methods and techniques in an integrated interactive system is presented, for all three stages of learning, to include the means for tutorial interaction, role modeling for skills practice, feedback consistent with requisite cues and prompts, measurement and evaluation, and record keeping. Specific experiences associated with development and production of one system are related, along with suggestions for the future direction for such systems.
