In the reported experimental test program, the smoke aspects of flexible urethane foams was studied under flaming conditions with the National Bureau of Standards test apparatus. The results are presented with special emphasis on the role of fire retardants in smoke generation. It is demonstrated that the combustibility properties of conventional and high resiliency foams can be modified with the use of fire retardant additives, or by changes in the polymer structure, to comply with prevailing combustibility standards.
