It has been found that winches and capstans have serious limitations when used for the handling of electrical cables, fiber optics and sonar arrays. A new linear drive based on an inverted-capstan principle is described which eliminates the bending stresses inherent in capstan drives. By designing the system so that the drive members completely encapsulate the array or streamer at a comparatively low helix angle, the gripping forces are evenly distributed over the circumference of the array or streamer, completely eliminating potentially destructive bending forces.
