Thermal ice pressure caused by a rapid air temperature rise is investigated for climatic conditions in Japan. After reviewing thermal properties of fresh water ice, several methods for the calculation of thermal ice stress are introduced. A numerical example at Kanayama Reservoir in Hokkaido shows that the thermal ice pressure can possibly be more than 2. 0 kg/cm**2 in northern portions of Japan.
