摘要
The factors that affect nitrogen balance in free-flowing streams and impoundments are elucidated in light of recent literature. For free-flowing streams, emphasis is placed on evaluation of nitrification, denitrification, and other reduction processes that affect nitrate nitrogen and the absorption and assimilation of nitrate and ammonium by aquatic plants. Nitrification and deniatrification in the complex Holston River environment is analyzed. The effects of nitrates, nitrites, organic nitrogen, and ammonium on eutrophication of reservoirs are described.
