We discuss the use of the forward simplex method of J. E. Aronson, T. E. Morton and G. L. Thompson for solving the multiperiod, personnel planning, linear goal programming models of Charnes, Cooper and Niehaus. Computational results indicate that for the forward simplex method, the CPU time and the number of pivots are linear in the number of time periods. The use of a personnel planning Decision Support System which contains a forward simplex code as its optimization subroutine is discussed. We present three scenarios of a manpower planning example which show how the system is useful for solving real-time, conversational versions of multiperiod personnel planning models.
