A discussion is presented of how the effects of changing technology and alterations in working practices have improved efficiency and reduced costs within the distribution engineering department, with specific reference to 'live insertion'. Design criteria and supply load criteria are outlined. The techniques of live- and dead-insertion of a new main into abandoned pipe are examined. Advantages and disadvantages of each technique are described.
