Early development of the arteriovenous fistula needle technique for hemodialysis

The history of the arteriovenous fistula needle procedure is reported. The first patient with chronic renal failure was dialyzed at the Bronx VA Hospital in December 1960. The doctors administering the dialysis decided to pursue the use of disposable needles. In 1961, the first vein-to-vein dialysis was published in the `New England Journal of Medicine.' The technique was further improved by the development of an internal shunt in patients undergoing hemodialysis.
