Failure of the main engines of NASA's shuttle Discovery to ignite during a test countdown on August 4, highlights this long-standing problem area of shuttle technology. Much overshadowed since the Challenger accident by the attention given to the problems and re-design of the Solid Rocket Booster, the main-engine problems are examined by the author.
