We present calculations of strong-coupling effects in high-T//c materials, with special emphasis on the oxygen isotope effect. Our interest was to study measurable consequences of the hypothesis that the high-T//c oxide superconductors are of the usual phonon-mediated type but with an unusually strong electron-phonon coupling. Such systems can be described by Eliashberg's theory. By using standard routines for solving Eliashberg's equations one can work out experimentally accessible criteria which could help deciding in favour or against the phonon mechanism.
