An investigation was made of the Raman scattering of light in zinc sulfide crystals activated with cation impurities (cadmium, manganese, iron). The first-order transitions induced by these impurities were detected and the spectrum of these transitions was compared with a Raman scattering spectrum calculated using the shell model. It was found that the incorporation of these impurities altered greatly the central force constant and this modified considerably the vibration spectrum of the crystal.
