The performance of enhanced distributed coordination function (EDCF) was evaluated, compared with the 802.11 legacy MAC in supporting voice, video and data applications through the network simulation of a scenario of 802.11e. The effects of Contention Window (CW) and Arbitration Inter-Frame Space (AIFS) on the service differentiation and total throughput were discussed. The contention-free burst (CFB) was also considered. It was concluded from the simulation that the EDCF with TXOP could provide better-differentiated channel access to different traffic types especially in high traffic load conditions. The movements caused by the parameters in CFB showed a lot of bouncing and instability in different applications and configurations.
