Spectral efficiency, power efficiency, and cost competitiveness are basic system requirements for digital microwave communications. Cost competitiveness with alternative transmission systems, both satellite microwave and terrestrial lightwave transmission systems, is an underlying requirement because the extent to which terrestrial microwave systems are cost competitive determines their market share. However, we shall address competitiveness not explicitly in economic terms, but implicitly in technical terms. Topics discussed include system complexity requiring higher level circuit integration, slow progress of MMIC applications and quasilinear microwave power amplification.
