There is an increasing demand for a class and reliability of power that cannot be supplied continuously from the commercial ac power distribution system. The need for high stability voltage and frequency usually arises because of sophisticated interconnected electronic systems performing critical and essential functions, such as computers, communication links, radar and power plant control and instrumentation systems. Economic aspects, reliability and loading are discussed. The operation of static and three-phase modern inverters are outlined. Various configurations are described.
