Preheating in the welding of ferritic steels

When high-strength structural steels are welded, the most important factor in order to obtain crack-free joints is to choose the correct preheating temperature. This can basically be determined using the CE (Great Britain), CET (Germany), CEN (Japan) and AWS (USA) methods which are all based on establishing a carbon equivalent. The influencing factors and the differences between the individual methods are explained. Using examples, the preheating temperatures calculated according to each procedure for 25 and 50 mm thick steel materials are specified and compared. This allows the user to compare the methods and the results which can be attained using them.
