The actual efficiency of a S. I. -engine under part load conditions is adversely affected by the increasing difference between the real work process and the ideal thermodynamic cycle. Early intake valve closing and variable compression ratio are investigated as measures to minimize the losses occurring with conventional throttling. This report shows concepts and test results obtained at the Volkswagen research division.
