Energy distributions of He+ and He2+ ions formed in ultracold He(23S1)+He(23P2) collisions

Oscillatory features were observed in the He+ ion-energy distribution of ultracold S+P metastable helium collisions. Energy distributions were also taken into account. By using very small electrostatic extraction fields, a meV energy resolution was achieved for these molecular ions. The measurement confirmed the maximum theoretical recoil energy of 1.1 meV. Finally, it was shown that the combination of a MOT and a TOF technique provides a powerful experimental tool.
