This paper provides a base case using standard accepted technology of two wound rotor single speed 4476 kW (6000 hp) motors to drive the primary SAG (semiautogenous) mills of a hypothetical 36,364 t/d typical porphyry copper mill. One other fixed speed drive is described and five variable speed drive configurations are reviewed. Capital costs for the entire grinding circuit, from crusher product to flotation feed, were developed for the base case and each of the alternatives. A technical evaluation comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each drive is presented.
