The author presents his views on several research areas in which he believes the field of systems and control can and should be making important contributions for some time to come. The questions addressed are: (1) In what areas can the control community have an impact? (2) What is it about the methods and perspectives of control and systems that provide these opportunities? (3) What form might the contributions take? The areas addressed are computation vision; inverse problems; complex and hybrid signal processing problems; and computational aspects and parallel processing.
