Digital multiplex equipment for 2-34 Mbit/s ensures multiplexing of sixteen plesiochronous 2 048 kbit/s into one digital 34 368 kbit/s signal, and vice versa, using the economies inherent in an n, (n plus 2) multiplex system, n here being the most commonly used level in digital hierarchy, the 2 Mbit/s level. The paper contains the principles involved in designing such equipment, and the electrical and mechanical characteristics.
