Taking manufacturing as an example, there is no union so likely to succeed in fostering emergencies of true factory automation than that of personal computers in software harmony with distributed motion controllers. If the personal computer is to be a partner to the distributed controller, then the personal computer screen is a window on the controller scene. It follows then that windows on the screen are where expert knowledge, so often buried in alien code, emerges to inspire cool decisions in times of crisis. Personal computer menus calmly explain reasons for proposed action options - palms grow less sweaty as alternatives are studied. This article discusses trends in software now offered for the personal computer as it remolds the practice of control.
