This paper surveys various concepts of thermal energy storage that have been proposed to enable solar thermal power systems to operate during momentary interruptions of sunlight and during night hours. The concepts, some of which are being tested on laboratory scales, are classified into sensible heat storage, latent heat storage and chemical energy storage. Technological and economic evaluation is given to each classified storage concept.
