The two-dimensional problem of diffraction of a plane wave in a vacuum by a large nonuniform impedance cylinder with an arbitrary cross section is solved in the zeroth-order approximation of the quasiwave method for both polarizations in cylindrical coordinates. Explicit quadrature formulas are derived for the integral scattering cross section. It is shown that the well-known estimates of the cross section in the Kirchhoff approximation for perfectly conducting bodies can be obtained from these formulas by making some additional simplifying assumptions.
