A large-scale field investigaion was made of the mud pumping phenomenon and field measurements were carried out to confirm the effect of several countermeasures against mud pumping. It was found that effective countermeasures against mud pumping are to increase the ballast thickness and transverse drainage, to improve the side ditch or provide a new side ditch to cover the roadbed, to lower the groundwater level and to replace the roadbed.
