The effect of superimposed mean and alternating stresses with respect to the fatigue hardening and fatigue softening behavior of austenitic stainless steel was studied. The material was subjected to 12 and 24% reduction in cross sectional area and subsequently fatigued in a pulsator in axial tension and compression with and without mean stress. It was noticed that a small mean stress appears to prevent softening up to 50,000 cycles (at least) in material subjected to lesser prestrain (12%), while this is not the case for material subjected to larger prestrain (24%).
