摘要：

Personal computers are bridging the gap between the individual researcher and online databases located in remote computers. The best tool for the communications is a micro-computer equipped with a modem and a communications program. The first and still largest vendor for bibliographic databases is Dialog in Palo Alto. The largest supplier of chemical factual databases is CAS ONLINE by Chemical Abstracts Service. The main advantage of the direct dialog between the researcher and database is the rapid adaptation due to the feed-back from the query.
