High stress valve spring designing can be used to increase engine revolutions or to reduce fuel consumption. However, increases in spring wire tensile strength do not extend fatigue life unless the sensitivity to non-metallic inclusions and their sizes are restricted. A study of the optimum chemical compositions for higher ductility and strength in valve springs and non-metallic inclusion controlling techniques has made it possible to manufacture a valve spring steel with excellent fatigue life at a higher stress level.
