Since 1953 the South African Iron and Steel Industrial Corporation (ISCOR) is mining at Sishen by surface method iron ore, containing between 62. 9 and 69. 9% Fe. The deposit is located at a distance of 1,033 km from Port Elizabeth and of about 850 km from Saldanha Bay (about 80 miles north of Cape Town). A project incorporating an 850 km railway from Sishen to Saldanha Bay; port facilities capable of handling ore carriers up to 250,000 tons dwt; and the export of iron ore plus steel semiproducts has been recently approved by the South African Government; and is described.
