In spite of the recent great advancement of robot technology, robots have not been widely introduced in the steel industry, as compared with other industries. This paper describes the processes and facilities in which robotization is needed, analyzes the factors that hinder robotization in the steel industry, and describes examples of robotization in Kobe Steel, including direct spray-marking equipment for hot material, a fully automatic conditioning system for square billets, and sequence block-throwing equipment for continuous casting.
