Generation of methane gas, a byproduct of municipal waste decomposition in landfills, has been viewed historically as a problem. In some of the larger landfills in the U. S. , it has been necessary to collect the gas to prevent its migration into properties adjacent to these landfills where it could form explosive mixtures. A project to collect, compress and treat landfill gas - now under way in California - is described. The demonstration project that calls for the recovery of 1 MMscfd of landfill gas will produce a treated gas with a heating value of approximately 650 BTU/scf.
