The possibilities of using remote-sensing methods for retrieving the transparency of water bodies and content of chlorophyll a and total phosphorus as the most informative indicators of the trophic state are discussed on the basis of an analysis of various approaches to a description of the trophic state of water bodies. It is emphasized that the combined used of the data of remote sensing and direct measurements is the most reliable way of solving the problem under consideration.
