Analysis and Synthesis of the Functions of Technical Products.

The purpose of this work is to derive theorems for a unified and complete product development from a survey of concept systems and procedures. For this purpose a set-theoretical oriented consideration of properties and requirements is proposed, the results of which can serve as the basis for a function categorization. From the analysis of a product its function is derived stepwise, clearly showing significant relations between the shape and the function of a product. Finally, a study is made of the spectrum of the so-called unnormalized functions, which is very frequently used in publicized examples, but is hardly ever theoretically considered in the design-methodology literature.
