LOOK AT RIGID SHAFT COUPLINGS.

The several types of rigid shaft couplings - flange couplings, compression couplings, clamp couplings, and muff couplings - are described. All rigid coupings transmit as much, or more, torque than the shafts they connect. Each size of coupling is designed to accept a range of shaft sizes, and will transmit the horsepower of the largest. A problem may arise, however, in the case of high-speed shafts, in which the rate of rotation may exceed the rating of cast-iron flanges. In such cases, the application should be referred to the manufacturer of the coupling for safety approval.
