In 1981, approximately 300 million tons of goods were transshipped in the inland ports of the German Federal Republic. The totalvolume of traffic in the public inland ports may be subdivided as follows: shipping, 45%; road traffic, 35%; railways, 20%. The paper gives details about port installations, traffic and transshipment arrangements. Port development is influenced by changes in the types of craft used and goods transported.
