To cut a cam, data on required follower motion is typically converted by a computer directly into paper-tape instructions for an NC milling machine. If a computer isn't available, complex graphical construction techniques are used to determine cam profile. A simpler method, using a programmable calculator to develop cam profiles and cutter geometries, is nearly as efficient as fully computerized approaches and is much quicker than graphic construction techniques. This article shows how to develop the cam profile equations in general and provides ready-to-use equations for four common follower types: translating flat-faced, translating roller, oscillating flat-faced and oscillating roller.
