An experimental investigation was carried out on the concentration distribution of the suspended particles, the bubble diameter and the gas holdup for a suspension-bubble column containing particles not in suspension. The observed concentration distribution of the suspended particles was analyzed on the basis of a precipitation-dispersion model, and an empirical equation was proposed for this concentration distribution, which is required in the calculation of the quantity of unsuspended particles above the gas distributor in a bed of particles in high concentration. The effect of the unsuspended dense particle layer above the gas distributor on bubble formation was also considered, and a semi-theoretical equation for the diameter of the bubbles in a suspension-bubble column is proposed.
