Mechanism of Corrosion Failure of Firebox Waterwalls in Boilers Fired by Solid Fuel.

Intensive external corrosion of pipes in furnaces of 300 MW boilers fired by anthracite fires and lean coals with admixtures of anthracite is investigated. It is found that corrosion mainly affects denuded pipes. The view about a purely gaseous corrosion is refuted. It is stated that, with high air excess, some pulverized coal is not fired, thus causing pipe erosion. The combined corrosion-erosion process intensifies destruction of the metal. Recommendations are given for the prevention of this process. These are: more uniform distribution of p. f. and prevention of too high an air excess.
