This paper considers the relationship between men and machines in naval dockyards where the quality of the end product - the sophisticated modern warship and the services it receives and provides - is a complex permutation of quality in design, quality in manufacture, quality in maintenance and upkeep, and quality in operation. It considers the interface problems and the interactive skills that exist at each stage between the man performing the operation and the machines of varying complexity which he commands, and brings them together in the total Ship/Weapon system.
