Artificial intelligence emerged in the early 1970s and is now the basis for a wide range of professional software tools. The authors describe Intelligence Service, an expert system shell that combines a powerful inference engine with a user friendly interface. One of the major features of this expert system shell is that it can be used by people with no classical programming experience. As evidence of this, the authors outline a few of the many applications that have been developed using Intelligence Service.
