Don't overlook static-mixer reactors

Static mixers are well established in the process industries for mixing, blending, and related tasks. These effectively handle a variety of difficult process situations. A static mixing unit consisting a series of stationary, motionless guiding elements mixes fluids by utilizing pumping energy. As such the fluid is mixed thoroughly and the heat and mass transfer providing a narrow residence-time distribution are enhanced. All of these features are desirable in a reactor. Static-mixer reactors are commonly employed as continuous tubular reactors operating in plug-flow fashion. In addition, static mixer can serve as a component of a loop-reactor system and also enhances a continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR).
