Operating principles of the vacuum arc devices for fault-current-limiting applications are summarized. General operating characteristics are given for the vacuum arc fault current limiter (VAFCL) and the magnetically controlled vacuum arc switch. Results detailed include the VAFCL repetitive voltage spiking phenomena, the mechanism of the voltage spiking, and techniques for enhancing current limiting by enhancing spiking development. Refs.
