Experience from past high-performance installations indicates that marine gears can be designed to transmit the high torque generated by crosshead diesel engines to very low-speed propellers. This article reviews design principles of heavy marine gears, and discusses additional design features of gears for slow-speed engines and propellers. Case histories of gear types utilized in this fashion are cited.
