The influence of the grain boundary phases on properties and production conditions of oxide ceramic materials such as Al//2O//3 and ZrO//2 as well as of non oxide materials such as SiC and Si//3N//4 is discussed. Some examples are given. Special consideration is given to the secondary phases forming at the grain boundaries.
