Mobile communication is becoming increasingly ubiquitous. Portable devices need to be equipped with displays that are capable of presenting an ever-growing quantity of information to the viewer at high resolution. Microdisplays based on ferroelectric liquid crystal-over-silicon (FLCoS) technology provide an attractive solution. They are fast, small, lightweight and - being mostly based on standard CMOS technology - should be available at low cost. In this article we report on recent advances in the manufacturing process of FLCoS microdisplays.
